Ingon Manor 2001

Winners - Long Marston by 5 - 3

Report

This was the first Wyder Cup Tournament played in one day between two teams of 8 . No singles matches were played just Foursomes and Fourballs. (All off scratch) The Foursomes were played in the morning over the front 9 holes, then after lunch the Fourballs were played over the full 18 hole course.

Although Dave Winkle and Dave Silvester (ROW) lost in the morning they asked to be left together in the afternoon as they felt they had a point to prove and they did earning a victory over the same pairing who had beaten them in the morning. But the cup was already lost and won in the morning with LM taking a 3 - 1 lead. The points were shared in the afternoon with 2 wins each Final score being 5 - 3 to Long Marston (LM)

The original cup donated by D.K.Jones was presented by M.Winkle (losing Captain) to
J.Mathews (Winning Captain) at the presentation Dinner also held at Ingon Manor Golf Club on the same night.

No Player of the Tournament was decided but it was noted that the unchanged pairs of Chris Holmes & Anthony Hodges for LM and Mick Wassel & Alan McGlade (ROW) both had 100% records, both winning in the Morning and Afternoon and earning 2 points each for their teams.

Ingon Manor was played off Yellow Tees Par 72 - 6057yards The day was organised by John Mathews for the Hosts (LM)

During the evening meal and presentation everyone agreed what a success the day and the tournament had been, it was discussed further and it was decided that the following year we would travel further a field with a couple of nights stay over,
allowing a practise round and the introduction of Singles matches to follow a similar overall format to the famous Ryder Cup.

Dave Silvester was elected as Captain for ROW and as Hosts they would organise it.
Very soon Abersoch Golf club and the Riverside Hotel were decided upon and booked for September 2002..
