WYDER CUP 2004 -24 th & 25th September

Carlyon Bay, St Austell, Cornwall

HEADLINES: Rest of the World Win Wyder Cup 13-11

Its all square at 3-3 after the Friday mornings Fourballs but R.O.W push ahead with 4 points in the Foursomes in the afternoon to get to 7-5 up.

Its all square in the singles with both teams winning 6 matches each to take the final score to 13-11. A win for the Reds.

Wyder Cup stolen by disgruntled losers.

At breakfast Sunday morning the Wyder cup goes missing believed to be stolen by members of the Long Marston team who can’t accept that they lost the cup.

Dave Silvester said “That’s the only way they were going to retain it” because he promised everyone in the ROW team that he would “Bring back the cup”

Later the triumphant Captain stated that if they are that desperate they can keep it !!!!!!

Foursomes Victory?

Its Dave Silvester’s canny pairings in the foursomes that puts a lot of Red on the scoreboard and does the damage, R.O.W. win 3 matches, half 2 and only lose the remaining match narrowly by 1 hole.

All Tight in singles on Saturday

Singles begin with overnight score at 7-5 to ROW. Long Marston win first 3 matches to go into 7-8 lead. Then back to 8-8 with a victory by Mark Sherratt over B.Francis stopping the rot for a while, but then Long Marston win 2 more matches to go 2 in the lead at 8-10. The cavalry then come to the rescue with Steve Luker, Malcom Ward and Martin Winkle all winning to make it 11-10 to ROW.

But the drama still isnt over, Phil Garrod for Long Marston beats Scott Walters to level it at 11-11.

Dave Winkle gets to dormie 3 over Ken Aston and then wins on the 16thGreen to take it to 12-11, but its still not enough, its all down to the Tight 7th match between AndyToal and Long Marston Captain Chris Holmes. Andy manages to get to 1up on the 16th going down the 17th with the knowledge that its all down to him (His Captain told him), he wins the hole, wins the match and wins the Wyder cup !!! What a Hero !!!

Traditional win.

In keeping with every Wyder cup so far the team in the lead at the halfway stage goes on to take the cup. No team in Wyder Cup history as ever come from behind.

Team effort

Dave Silvester forced to rotate squad to give all 14 at least one game, this was decided with a qualifying round on Thursday where top 10 would play all 3 matches 11 &12 would play 2 matches and 13 & 14 to make one appearance in the fourball matches. This pays of as all 14 win at least ½ a point each.

Player of the Tournament

Trophy goes to Andy Toal, awarded as normal by the winning Captain. ROW Captain Dave Silvester wanted a hero in his Friday night pep talk, handing out pictures of Colin Montgomery with the words “This is a hero, who will be a hero tomorrow ?”

Other Stories: -

Captains meet head on in Foursomes and share the point.

One of the tightest matches in Wyder cup history between Dave Silvester/Mick Wassell and Brian Francis/Chris Holmes provides drama right to the very end. With both teams taking it in turns to go to 1 up then 1 down, Long Marston squeeze ahead to 2 up on the 9th as Chris Holmes plays an impossible chip out of a tuft of long grass at the side of the green to see the ball hit the flag and drop in the cup for 6 . This only lasts for one hole as ROW win the 10th to get back to 1 down. The next 4 holes are halved before Long Marston get in trouble on the 15th to let ROW win with a bogey and get back to all square. Then the nerves take over, the 16th is halved with a double bogey 6 , Long Marston win the 17 th with a bogey 6 then comes the final hole with Long Marston at 1 up.

Brian Francis tees off on the 18 th hits the ball out of bounds on the right so everybody thinks ? Just as ROW think they have a chance the ball hits the road and somehow manages to bounce all the way back into play to end up by the front green side bunker on the right. Mick Wassell who can’t believe his eyes hits the ROW tee shot to the left hand side of the green leaving a chip over the bunker for his partner Dave Silvester. Chris Holmes chips too long onto the back of the green leaving a 20ft putt for Francis. Silvester chips onto the green leaving a 9ft putt uphill for Wassell.

Francis rolls it down the hill to leave it 2 ft short which is not given by ROW. Wassell leaves ROW putt short and left of the hole about 18” which is also not given.

This leaves Holmes to putt for the half on the hole and the match. Silvester can’t believe his eyes as the putt lips out and he is left with the most nervous tap in of 18” to take ½ a point.

After standing over the tiny putt for what seems like eternity Silvester nervously hits it into the side of the cup to take the hole and halve the match. Phew!!!!

Captain Dave Silvester annoyed at giving away a point in the fourballs

Dave Silvester paired with Dave Winkle are 2 up against Mike Pennington and Dave Hodges. Silvester misses short putt on 6th to go to 3 up then misses the short one back to lose the hole instead and go back to 1 up .

Later in the match Silvester misses another 2 footer only to be copied by his partner Dave Winkle on the next hole.

These 3 misses cost ROW the match as Long Marston finally win 3&2

Tight Match between ROW Vice Captain Mick Wassell against Terry Edmunds.

Edmunds gets to dormie 3 but Wassell gets back to dormie 1 then hits his tee shot out of bounds on 18th to lose singles match by 2 holes.

In reflection Wassell believes he lost it on the 6th hole where Edmonds was in the left hand green side bunker and thins the shot right across the green heading for out of bounds over the cliff and into the sea, only to see the ball hit the narrow fence post and bounce back onto the green !!!

Mix up on rules in Foursomes?

Garrod and Scott think they have a victory by one hole over Toal and Jeffries only to find that due to confusion over playing a provisonal ball then finding the original ball they actually played out of turn which meant loss of hole, so match is halved

Winkle meets and beats Whiteside three times.

Martin Winkle was drawn against Mike Whiteside in the Fourballs, Foursomes and the Singles and wins all 3 points. Other players besides Mike who failed to win any points were Anthony Hodges and Ken Aston.

Top players shine?

Pennington and Luker win all three of their matches.

Rookies show no signs of first Tournament nerves.

Mark Sherratt for ROW wins in Fourballs and Singles.

Kevin Scott for Long Marston wins in singles and earns a half in the Foursomes.
